Open source also lets the challenges be distributed over a large group of developers and generally means that a wide number of different approaches will be tried. In the race to achieving AGI (or enhancing human intelligence)one way to keep the bad guys from winning — or at least to slow them down — is to have the good guys use a superior approach.
