A New Ghostbusters?

FFR listeners know of my fondness for the first Ghostbusters movie. To me, it is the Godfather of comedy. For years fans have wanted a decent sequel. Finally, it looks like there’s some chance that it might happen.

Or if you’re a Bill Murray fan, t starts getting interesting at about the 2.5 minute mark.

I love that image of him walking down 5th Ave. singing the Ghostbusters song.

I’ve been following development on GB3 for years. The first movie is a masterpiece. Do this sequel thing correctly and it’s Citizen Kane. It should be epic and powerful. Moving and hilarious. Ironic and dry and sad and uplifting and beautiful to look at. Like the first movie, but a glorious payoff to that movies genius, marinating for two decades.

On the other hand they’ll probably hire a bunch of young, currently popular comics who think being loud and saying ‘fuck’ a lot is funny, plug in a bunch of CGI effects and push the original four guys into the background. In that case it’s a disaster. Of Biblical proportions. A misbegotten travesty.

In my opinion it really needs the touch of a real aesthetic master to work – someone like a PT or Wes Anderson, in the absence of Laslo Kovacs stunning cinematography from part 1 (RIP Laz). And please God no Apatow crew in the cast. That would break my heart into tiny pieces.
