J.K. Rowling may have stumbled onto a way to interfere with the normal transmission of parental memes into children's brains when she invented Harry Potter. I've noticed that children become obsessed with these increasingly lengthy novels even against their parents' wishes, hence the christian fundamentalist parents who complain about the franchise.
There is absolutely no reason for me to be laughing at these, but somehow I am. Oh, a few more:

For a great meme that won't fill you up and never lets you down, make it a Western meme!

And by far the best of them all:

WEST
ERRRRRRN
MEEEEEEEEME!

Glenn has used the last thirty years of beer history as an illustration of how and why most things are getting better all the time.

I wish I had a cite for this - it was originally a tech central station article I believe - but he also used this illustration in his book Army of Davids.

Anyway, In the 70's mass produced beer was pretty lousy. In fact, it was a watered down swill. But beer drinkers put up with it because there were few alternatives. Imported beer was expensive and sometimes was stale by the time it reached the consumers. And the smaller domestic brewers had not survived Prohibition.

This status quo was challeged first by the home brewers. Then came the microbreweries.

The success of those operations forced the big brewers to get better. So wether you buy from a larger brewer, a microbrewer or even brew it yourself, you are likely to have a better beer than was generally available in the mid 70s.

Freedom brings the "<a href="https://www.blog.speculist.com/archives/000327.html" rel="nofollow">hassle</a>" of choices, but having choices means that our options generally improve.

So maybe our catch phrase should be something like...

"For a good beer, call Lady Liberty at 555-1776."
