More anti-aging jokes:

"I'm not scared of dying. I just don't want to be there when it happens."
--Woody Allen

News from Norway:

"Police here have arrested a Norwegian for selling Eternal Youth pills. Records at the Oslo Police Station show him to be a repeat offender. He was similarly charged in 1452, 1799, and 1935."

Well said. The pro-aging trance keeps baffling me, but then, I have to remember that it is a perfectly logical way to rationalize for someone who thinks there's no way out.

"Death by aging is inevitable, so I'll do some mental gymnastics to convince myself (and others) that death by aging is actually a good thing after all."

I suspect that Aubrey is right, and that once a really conclusive demonstration is made in the lab, people will (maybe not all at once) drop that illusion. Once it isn't inevitable, you can look at the problem honestly.

One of the ironies of this whole discussion is that much of modern medicine is devoted to treating symptoms/conditions that arise secondary to aging. After all, Adult Diabetes is the result of an accumulation of biochemical and physiological errors that eventually lead to insulin insensitity or an auto-immune response to insulin. Parkinson's Disease can be usefully thought of as the result of premature aging and death of a particular population of brain cells. Even most Cancers can be thought of as concomitants of aging; ie, an accumulation of genetic erroes and a failing immune surveilance system whose functioning has been impaired by aging. If we could make the case more cogently and succinctly that we are already routinely treating aging (when we treat high blood pressure, not a disease but a condition that leads to premature cardiovascular aging; or when we use Lipitor to treat high Cholesterol levels, again, not a disease but a concomitant of a wealthy life style that leads to premature aging of the cardiovascular system) we might be able to change the discourse in ways amenable to an anti-aging public policy position.
