neanderthals should be cloned. climate dealt them an unfair blow. do you really think that if the dead could speak out they would not want to see their descendants once again living on earth? dont all humans want to have kids and grand kids? give them a chance. they can not speak for themselves. their voices are quiet. forever unless we help them.. clone them.

"While human cousins will remain safely extinct, most of us would love to see the cave bears brought back."

NO, THANK YOU!!! (on the cave bears)

i would rather see a primitive horse cloned. The modern ones are all getting dangerously bottle-necked (and stupid).

But i do think a human cousin would be gladly welcomed back into the family. ;-)

I think the ethical issues about cloning Neanderthals would be solved by putting them up for adoption. I know me and my wife would happily adopt one. We should be more understanding and compassionate for life in all its forms.

Brian:

Zoos are out of the question, but normal life would be too. Some sort of institution would have to be involved. Ethically, it just can't be done.

Except maybe by way of a simulation. What if our understanding of DNA grows to the point that we can simulate the development of organism virtually? Perhaps even place the individual within a virtual environment.

Neanderthal Matrix!

I don't think much of the "frighten and confuse" argument. They would have to be brought up from infancy as normal humans, insofar as possible. Their cognitive power would require no less. It wouldn't necessarily work out the same as it does for h.sap., but there could be no excuse for treating them as zoo animals.

But first, let's have a cave bear or two. That would be fabulous!

I was going to write a comment, but decided to do an addendum. See above.

Hmm...I wonder whether this comment is then entirely necessary?

I suppose it's all right, so long as I don't prolong it.

But then again...
